READING GROUP: Trickster Makes This World by Lewis Hyde

In this three-part reading series we will explore and discuss the single chapter Matter Out of Place from Lewis Hyde's book Trickster Makes This World: Mischief, Myth and Art. The whole book and a PDF of the chapter will be provided to all registrants.

More about the book:

In Trickster Makes this World, Lewis Hyde brings to life the playful, disruptive side of human imagination as it is embodied in trickster mythology. He first revisits the old stories - Hermes in Greece, Eshe in West Africa, Krishna in India, Coyote in North America, among others - and then holds them up against the lives and work of more recent creators: Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, Allen Ginsberg, John Cage, and Fredrick Douglass. Twelve years after its first publication, Trickster Makes this World - authoritative in its scholarship, loose-limbed in its style - has taken its place among the great works of modern cultural criticism.

This book was one of the works that inspired the founding of Design Studio for Social Intervention (DS4SI) - join us at the Design Gym as we explore this scholarly work in community.

This reading group will meet VIRTUALLY for 3 consecutive Mondays: 4/29, 05/06 & 5/13 in DS4SI's Zoom Room.
