Make and Play Your Own Taiko!
Taiko (Japanese word for drums) is a full body art form. Using your body, your voice, and rhythm, taiko requires energy and spirit. Collectively we are more powerful than we are individually. In this engaging and family-friendly workshop, each participant will make their own Gomikan (trash can) taiko. We will learn basic patterns and a song on the taiko! Come use your voice, your mind, and your body in a welcoming no-pressure environment.
Taiko have a long and rich history in Japan, their function has varied throughout history, ranging from communication, military action, theatrical accompaniment, and religious ceremony to both festival and concert performances. In North America, many of the pioneer artists of the taiko community played a central role as organizers in the 70’s within the Japanese and Asian American communities.
NO experience or rhythm necessary! Bring your passion, an open mind, and a willingness to try. Go home with new friends, knowledge, and a new instrument!
This is a one-day intensive workshop on 05/04 from 12pm - 4pm at the Design Gym. Please enter through 7 Ramsey Street in Upham's Corner.
